(Mid-Autumn Festival 2014) Peony Jade

We continually get blown away by Peony Jade’s signature flaky Teochew ‘orh ni’ baked mooncake ever since its debut 5 years ago. (Read last year’s review here: https://melicacy.com/?p=6009) Attempting to steal the limelight from the award-winning signatures are novel creations that raise the bar each year. Expectations remain high. Continue reading

Babette – Restaurant & Bar

Babette – Restaurant & Bar beckons to lovers of good food and libations, to lovers, friends, families and colleagues. Jazzing up the Jalan Besar locale, the 64-seater Babette nestled within the new 4-star Parc Sovereign Hotel is hip with its urban industrial swank, but not just a novelty –it’s committed to serving unpretentious food that do justice to the ingredients involved.

Confit Salmon & Soba ($17)

It was such a joy conversing with owner (also a Radio DJ who does a Sunday morning (11am) show with Mediacorp’s 987FM) who speaks of food with so much zeal and knowledge. The name “Babette” was inspired by the 1980s Danish film titled “Babette’s Feast” a charming film about how a good meal can right wrongs, and how a good chef can transform a dinner into a love affair. The metaphors in the film about food, love and relationship, and how a good meal can transcend language and culture, has inspired him and with Babette – Restaurant and Bar, he aims to bring a simple, honest and unpretentious dining experience to diners.

House-baked Banana Bread with Ice Cream (Dessert of the Day)

The menu draws inspiration from familiar flavours in comfort dishes, but often with an inventive ‘Babette twist’. Main dishes at Babette marry French techniques with Japanese ingredients. Finicky gourmands will be pleased to know that a range of sauces are made in-house daily by strict standards. Continue reading

Tiger Beer-inspired Menu at Restaurant Labyrinth in celebration of National Day

“Uncaged” is a term defined by Singapore’s national icon Tiger Beer as having the courage to follow your instincts, live on your own terms and look at things afresh. The home of the 82-years-old brand, Tiger Beer looks to become the symbol of courage, inspiring young adults and the new generation to ‘uncage’ their ambitions, igniting and leaping full of passion to achieve their dreams. This campaign upholds the pride of the Singaporean identity and it is only fitting to lead the launch of Tiger’s global repositioning on home grounds.

This symbol of courage is also portrayed and runs deeply in Chef Han’s culinary roots –Chef Han of Resetaurant Labyrinth being one of Tiger’s Uncage personalities. Continue reading

Sunday Brunch Buffet at The Knolls of Capella Singapore

Brunch is one singular meal of the day that makes me radiate enthusiasm. Part of the charm is about waking up late and having breakfast food at lunch. It could be a simple afternoon of café-sitting, or it could be a luxurious affair like having a buffet at The Knolls of Capella Singapore.

The Mediterranean spread at The Knolls reveals praise-worthy virtue –the standard of food speaks for itself. Highlights include fine-cut meats at the live station, foie gras-something-of-the-day presented on wooden boards alongside dainty savouries, freshly shucked oysters in a few varieties, and more.

Fun outdoor sports with Superfly Monkey Dragons – Parkour Freerunning Academy & Agency

Watch a child, watch his movements closely. He would have climbed the chair, jumped across the table, rolled down skillfully and vaulted over his toys. The world around him is his playground. There is no hesitation, nor limits, no reservations, and absolutely no thoughts on the ‘what-ifs’. If he falls, he gets up and try the chair again, if he bumps a knee, he would brush the pain off. Doesn’t this remind us of the trial and error activity we are familiar with while we were young. This is the art of movement, practiced alone or with cajoling company, competitive or not.
