Baker & Cook

Baker & Cook is an artisanal bakery located off the beaten path at Greenwood Avenue, an upmarket residential area in Bukit Timah.

Dean Brettschneider, owner of Bake & Cook, is a global professional baker, TV celebrity and award-winning author of 10 cookbooks. His passion for baking is absolutely apparent in the great range of irresistible products that greet you as you enter the bakery.

Patrons who dine in can choose to sit around long communal tables, indoors or outdoors.

The selection of breads comes from all over the world; one will be spoilt for choice, as everything looks so enticing.


Bagels (Plain, Cinnamon & Raisin, Cranberry)


The Danish Rugbrod is studded with flax, sesame, sunflower seeds and oats.


The highly favoured croissants are certainly made under the loving hands of the baking experts –simple but brilliant.


Turkish Pide

The unassuming Turkish Pide deserves all the raves and praises! It is light, airy, soft and slightly chewy, best consumed immediately when it is warm. It is an absolute MUST-HAVE!

Assortment of bread:
- Olive Bread
- Pain Miche (rye, whole-wheat and white flours)
- Mini Croissant
- German Volkorn Loaf (flax, sesame & sunflower seeds)
- Pain au Levain

Homemade jams are available in three flavours: Apricot, Mixed Berries and Strawberry, with the Apricot being my favourite. Jars of jams are placed on every table for your slathering pleasures.

Baker & Cook is the first to bring Allpress Expresso to Singapore, a leading specialty coffee roaster from New Zealand.

The Mochaccino ($5) is highly recommended for chocolate lovers. The aromatic, concentrated coffee blends perfectly with the rich chocolate-y flavour; it is oh-so-comforting, especially on a rainy day.

Apart from quality coffee, tea (from the UK) and healthy smoothies, a wine selection is available as well.


Quiche of the Day ($7.95)

Another item I enjoyed was the Quiche, served warm with salad and chutney. I love the textures within the soft yet firm custardy filling.

Tartines

Salmon, cream cheese, spring onion spread and fresh dill

Tartines are priced at $12.95, served on lightly toasted Pain Miche Bread.


Egg mayonnaise, avocado with capers and cress

The Egg Mayo Tartine gets my vote. The avocado lends a subtle but favourable taste and smooth, creamy texture to the overall dish. Very comforting! The tartines come in good portion sizes assuming that cakes and tarts have been ordered alongside.

Brunch

Eggs Benedict ($16.95)

The all day breakfast menu is perfect for the late-risers. The Eggs Benedict comes with two poached eggs, served with crispy bacon on crisp toasted bread, and finally topped with hollandaise sauce. The choice of Pain Miche Bread is perfect. I’m usually not a bacon person, but I enjoyed the bacon that crisped up almost like chips, without being chewy.

Desserts

Lemon Tart

The Lemon Tart boasts a light, buttery and sufficiently crumbly pastry with lusciously smooth filling that will warrant repeat orders.


Carrot Cake

The Carrot Cake is amazing; it is benchmark in every aspect! The incredibly moist and absolutely divine creation comes with a cream cheese frosting on top, scattered with cubes of dried apricot, black sesame and pumpkin seeds.


Gluten Free Orange Almond Cake

The Orange Almond Cake is soft, dense, and wands just the right level of sweetness! It carries a refreshing orange perfume that isn’t overpowering. It is gluten-free but it is as unbelievably tasty as its wheat-based counterparts.


Bombolini Donuts

The Custard-filled Donut is another personal favourite! Doughy and fluffy, it has just the right ratio of custard and dough. Despite the sugar coating on the surface, the donut is not cloyingly sweet!


The seductive Totally Chocolate Muffins are calling out for me. I have to try that someday.

Pretty packaged cookies make the perfect treats!

Verdict:
Baker & Cook raises the bar in the bakery trade; it is one of the best bakeries in town! I’m impressed, and in love!
