Our Korner, at The Scarlet Hotel

Our Korner is a restaurant and bar residing on the juncture of Ann Siang Hill and Erskine Road on the premises of The Scarlet –Singapore’s first luxury boutique hotel.

The boutique hotel exudes a romantic vibe, characterised by the opulence of the European royalty in the Victorian era. The interior of the 80-seater restaurant Our Korner doesn’t steer far away from complementing the hotel theme, with a more casual dining ambience.

The menu draws from a global repertoire with decidedly Asian accents and an injection of local flavour.

Soup

Laksa Clam Chowder ($14)

The Laksa Clam Chowder is a Chef’s recommendation, and my dining partners and I agree in unison. It is served in a foccacia bread bowl and drizzled with truffle oil. The unlikely combination of the striking and distinct perfume of truffle oil and the contrasting flavour of laksa proves to marry perfectly together in the expert hands of the chef. What a brilliant creation!

Appetisers

Oriental Wings ($16)

The Oriental Wings are marinated with 14 spices and herbs –my taste buds are definitely not hypersensitive enough to discern what the different spices are! The medium-sized wings boast juicy meat sealed within skin that is thin and crispy without being greasy.

Chilli Crab Sliders ($22)

The Chilli Crab Sliders is a standout! A row of 4 mini burgers is served with an accompanying signature Singapore chilli crab sauce that is delicately spiced and thickened with egg white for a silky texture. The patties are composed of crabmeat and diced water chestnuts, breaded and fried to a crispy golden brown. The chilli crab sauce is served separately, ensuring that the crust of the patties remain crispy without turning soggy.

Mains

Steamed Cod Fillet ($32)

The cod fillet is steamed in a turmeric leaf, served with olive oil mashed potatoes and beurre monté sauce. I have always associated turmeric with the colour yellow, from that aromatic powder used in curries! The fish inherited a subtle scent from the leaf, but it tasted a little bland for my liking.

Braised Beef Short Ribs ($38)

The Braised Beef Short Ribs arrives bone in, sitting in a Barossa Shiraz veal jus, on a bed of moist, buttery mashed potatoes. The meat is tender; the sauce is perfect; there is nothing negative to comment about!

Asian Korner

Nasi Goreng ($16)

The Nasi Goreng is one of the popular dishes at Our Korner, but I probably wouldn’t order it again. Nasi Goreng is widely available in our local food scene and their rendition is not particularly outstanding. There are plenty of other remarkable items on the menu that you can order; I wouldn’t recommend the Nasi Goreng.

Milkshake

Gula Melaka ($10)

The Gula Melaka milkshake is a blend of coconut milk, vanilla ice cream and the star ingredient, gula Melaka. It is a must try! The milkshake is dotted with vanilla bean specks, which is evidence of the quality of ice cream they use. YUM!

Dessert

’Colour Me Pretty’ ($12)

‘Colour Me Pretty’ comes with horlicks ice cream topped with colourful frosted icing cookies, mixed berries and whipped cream. It is a simple dessert that brings back nostalgic memories.

Can I have another scoop of horlicks ice cream please?

Nutella Chocolate Tart ($14)

Chocolate Royaltine ($14)

The Chocolate Royaltine is my favourite amongst the three cakes! I love the fact that the ratio of mousse to cake is higher.

Triple Chocolate Cheesecakes ($14)

‘Sandcastles’ ($12)

The ‘Sandcastles’ comes with chocolate, bailey’s and horlicks ice cream, topped with chocolate fudge and almonds. We substituted the chocolate ice cream for peanut butter ice cream, as we wanted to try something special! The Bailey’s ice cream is exceptionally good –thank goodness we didn’t substitute that, as we initially wanted to because I’m not a fan of alcohol.

While the night is still young, you can head over to the stylish bespoke bar and sip on cocktails.

Or simply lounge at the expansive and majestic sofa.
