Fine Palate Café

For those of you who have yet to fall in love with Fine Palate Café, it is an off-the-beaten-track bistro along Waterloo Street that’s managed to stand out with its deliciously simple concept. Classic dishes are enlivened with boldly innovative techniques and a cosmopolitan perspective while still keeping things uncomplicated and unpretentious.

Fine Palate is the brainchild of Heather Barrie –friendly and engaging, with a beautiful smile. She is bound to inspire budding cooks and bakers with her encouraging words and helpful tips.

The décor comes across as chic, minimalist and effortless; flower vases on each table greet you with positivity and freshness.

Crispy Chicken Triangles ($8)

For light bites, the Crispy Chicken Triangles is one of their most popular items. Golden crispy pastry skin encases chicken that is aromatised with lemongrass. Dip it into the accompanying sweet chilli sauce to be transported to the land of smiles –sawadee ka.

Mini Chicken Quesadillas ($8)

Served with homemade tomato salsa

Crispy Calamari ($14)

The irresistible Crispy Calamari was polished off quickly.

Fries ($6)

While waiting for the mains, we munched on fries. We couldn’t stop dipping them into the wasabi mayo –I even vied with an 8-year-old for the last morsel. Hee!

Quiche of the day ($12)

I love quiches, and Fine Palate’s quiche exhibits deliciousness in every aspect. I didn’t want to share this!

Crispy Kurobuta Pork Belly ($16)

Jalapeno salsa and mirin sauce

The Crispy Kurobuta Pork Belly didn’t quite hit the mark for me; it is unfortunately not as tender as I was hoping it to be. However, props have to be given for its creative incorporation of Jalapeno salsa and mirin sauce, which bring vibrancy to the palate.

Fine Palate Duo Burger ($10)

In case you didn’t know, Fine Palate is in the catering business as well. I happened to attend an event recently, where they had canapés and snacks from Fine Palate; their mini burgers, especially, are immensely popular with the crowd.

I am torn between the Wagyu Beef Burger and the Teriyaki Chicken Burger.

Tuna and Capellini (cold) ($20)

Seared yellow fin tuna capellini tossed in a sesame shoyu dressing

The Tuna and Capellini will please those who are steering towards the healthy route, with its clean and light flavours. The sesame shoyu dressing is less greasy as compared to other oil-based dressing.

Catch of the Day ($18)

Be sure to check out what’s the Catch of the Day. The snapper that we had that day was well executed, and turned out to be one of the highlights.

Duck Leg Confit ($26)

Braised red cabbage, roasted potoes and fresh asparagus

Salmon Benedict ($18)

Salmon gravlax, baby spinach, hollandaise sauce and rocket salad, served on an English muffin

Egg lovers like myself will not be able to resist items from the brunch menu, such as the Salmon Benedict. I wish they were more generous with the hollandaise sauce!

Lemon Meringue Milkshake ($10)

Fine Palate Café has the most unique milkshakes I’ve seen in any bistro. For instance, the Lemon Meringue Milkshake is one-of-a-kind. The lemon lends an aromatic zesty fragrance and also helps to cut the richness of the cream.

For those with an extreme sweet tooth, you can skip this and order the Chocolate Brownie Milkshake.

Chocolate Brownie Milkshake ($10)

Chocolate lovers, this is a must-try. The milkshake is rich and intense, full of chocolaty goodness. You even get bits and tiny chunks of brownie as you slurp along.

Baked Oreo Cheesecake ($10)

Guests who wish to enjoy a longer lunch have a choice of a 2-course set menu at $26++, or a 3-course set menu at $30++. The 2-course menu features either an appetiser & a main, or a main & a dessert, while the 3-course menu includes an appetiser, a main & a dessert.

Lemon Tart ($10)

With coconut analgise and raspberry compote

Tiramisu ($10)

The Tiramisu is a personal favourite, but it is based solely on biasness. It is one of my favourite desserts.

I’m easily satisfied with Tiramisus in general, as long as the sweetness level is adequate and there’s ample cream. I’m not fastidious when it comes to the intensity of espresso or its authenticity –but it can’t be too far off. Fine Palate’s appeases.

Mango Panna Cotta ($10)

The Mango Panna Cotta hits the homey spot; it is basically an ‘ang moh’ version of our all-time-favourite Asian dessert –the Mango Pudding.

The wide-ranging menu will cater to an international audience. I wish they would open for dinner.
