Rockin’ Fries ($3.90 for small with 1 dip/$4.90 for regular with 2 dips/$5.90 for large with 3 dips)
Rock and Ash is a casual dining spot conveniently located along Marina Square Link, the underpass that links Esplanade MRT and Marina Square. Their striking metier is hot crispy fries complemented by a wide range of house-concocted dips.
Classic dips include inferno cheese (a personal favourite), nacho cheese, mayo & chilli, garlic mayo, wasabi mayo, black pepper and chocolate. Top up $1 for gourmet dips such as inferno king beef, saucy mushroom and crunchy bacon.
Benefit from the free-flow of soft drinks and soup that comes with every main course ordered, and take advantage of the free WiFi –this is where you can plonk yourself all day, munching and engaging in mobile work.
Baked Olive Rice – Seafood Symphony ($10.90)
Main courses are reasonably priced, from as low as $7.90 for a burger, $9.90 for baked rice, $10.90 for grilled fish or chicken, and $11.90 for pasta –and you get to enjoy unlimited quantities of drinks and soup.
Crispy Pork Knuckle ($25.90)
The tiny kitchen pulls off the Crispy Pork Knuckle with crispy and succulent flair. The meat would benefit from longer hours of marinating for a deeper flavour.
Beef Burger with Caramel Bacon & Cheese ($9.90)
The moist and juicy beef patty exceeded my expectations. Choose from a wide range of burger toppings: caramel bacon & cheese, caramel banana, garlic & sautéed mushroom, inferno cheese sauce, nacho cheese sauce, egg & BBQ sauce, strawberry sauce, garlic & mayo sauce, and black pepper sauce.
Grilled Salmon served with mashed potato and salad ($16.90)
The Grilled Salmon is cooked all the way through. While widely acceptable by the mass, this could come across as slightly overcooked to some.
Crispy Fried Fish Fillet ($10.90)
The Crispy Fried Fish Fillet is a simple and an inexpensive dish that didn’t disappoint. Crispy on the outside, the flesh remains flaky and moist.
Deep Fried Ice Cream ($4.90)
What I love most about dessert here is that they use high quality New Zealand Natural Ice Cream. When I saw Deep Fried Ice Cream on the menu, it instantly reminded me of the one I’ve tried that was breaded and flash-fried, yielding a crispy golden crust. With such high expectations, this rendition came as a disappointment. I perceive it as an effortless job of coating ice cream with cornflakes.
There are hits and misses, but Rock and Ash is somewhere I would return to for the value-for-money meals, especially on days when I do not want to be confined within my study room walls.
