What will the ‘Water Snake Year’ bring for us?

I’m never the kind who believes in the extraordinary, the supernatural, or the unknown; I am probably the least religious person you’d ever know. But Feng Shui is not something I would dismiss as mere superstition. I’m still baffled by the science and studies behind it, but it is through experience that I know it actually works.

This article is a general guide for the upcoming year, 2013, which is derived from studies and calculations based on previous decades and centuries.

The ‘Dragon year’ is coming to an end, and another animal with a few similar features will soon arrive. 10 February 2013 is when the Chinese will celebrate the Lunar New Year –which most would assume the arrival of the ‘Snake year’. According to the Farmer or Thousand year calendar, the New Year actually starts on 4 February 2013, at 0:19am –the beginning of the ‘Water Snake Year’.

It comprises the following combination of elements:

Looking back at major events that have happened 60 years ago (in year 1953) –which is also the ‘Water Snake Year’ – natural disasters such as the North Sea floods, tornadoes and hurricanes killed thousands. Nuclear energy testing was also carried out.

In year 2013, natural disasters that happened in year 1953 could also be expected; you should be able to feel its influence as days get nearer to Feb 2013. Let’s pray that its catastrophic effects will be minimised.

Based on the year’s combination of elements, the ‘metal’ and ‘earth’ related industries will perform well, but ‘earth’ industries may seem too saturated. The ‘water’ and ‘fire’ related industries would not be faring well. The ‘wood’ industries remain unstable.

If you’re scratching your head reading about the terms ‘metal’, ‘earth’, ‘water’ and ‘fire’, here’re some examples:

‘Metal’ related industries include finance, jewellery, railway and hardware. ‘Earth’ related industries include real estate (properties), construction and civil engineering. ‘Water’ related industries include advertising, arts, spa and laundry. ‘Fire’ related industries include intellectual, airlines, communication, livestock and chemical process. ‘Wood’ industries include furniture, nurseries, cafes, catering and books/publishing.

Overall, the ‘Snake year’ will be peaceful, and brings sincerity as well as confidence. People will enjoy good nourishment despite the turbulence of life that can trigger reckless and impulsive actions. The year will also mature into something new to begin with. The advise is to stay humble, be focused, remain energetic and avoid making hasty decisions.

The luck that ‘Water Snake Year’ will bring for you depends largely on your individual ‘Bazi’, which is derived from your birth dates and time.

Will there be any changes to my house’s Feng Shui in 2013?

Yes, there will be changes in the types of energy to your surroundings, and most houses will be affected. The use of ‘flying stars analysis’ is a common practise to explain the types of energy that changes around your environment –information can also be easily found online.

The annual formation of the stars begins on 4 February 2013. The stars are symbolised by numbers and located on nine squares as shown in the diagram above. By superimposing the squares onto the layout of your house, you will be able to interpret the energies and its effects on your house.

Star 1 represents a positive star that can benefit career
Star 2 represents a negative star that can cause illness
Star 3 represents a negative star that can cause argument
Star 4 represents a neutral star that can benefit academic and romance
Star 5 represents the most negative star that can cause misfortune
Star 6 represents a neutral star, but when combined with a negative star, legal issues may arise
Star 7 represents a negative star related to robbery or scandals
Star 8 represents the most positive star that can benefit career, promotions and good wealth
Star 9 represents a positive star that leads to happy activities

Another factor to consider is the annual afflictions such as ‘Tai Sui’ and ‘San Sha’. It is advisable to keep these sectors undisturbed and avoid any major renovation to your house on these sectors during the year. If unavoidable, you should mitigate its bad effects by selecting a good date to start with. The Tai Sui will be at the South-Southeast sector; it is okay to sit in this sector, but you should avoid facing towards this direction. The San Sha will be at the East sector and you should try to avoid sitting on this sector –you can choose to face towards this direction.

The above interpretations can be useful as a general guide. However, if you feel that there are still recurring issues to your house occupants, I would advise a detailed house analysis, or building the ‘flying star birth chart’, which can only be done by those who had undergone proper training and practices.

Here’s wishing all a happy and prosperous 2013!
