Over the Moon with Mandarin Court’s Mooncakes

From 10 August to 30 September 2012, mooncakes will take centre stage at Mandarin Court Chinese Restaurant.

An indispensable pastry during the Mid-Autumn festival, it is a tradition to graze on mooncakes while admiring the bright full moon.

But with Mandarin Court’s meticulously and tastefully handcrafted mooncakes, a bright full moon is non-requisite to take pleasure in this festive treat.

Mini Snow Skin Raspberry Mooncake (8 pieces for $56) –new!

My favourite kinds of mooncakes are those with a ‘snow skin’ (冰皮). Making the perfect snow skin mooncake is not an easy feat. Novices who attempt making them would encounter umpteen flops, such as failing to attain the right texture, or even yielding dough that is hard as rock.

Innumerable hotels and restaurants are offering mooncakes of various forms and flavours that will leave you spoilt for choice. Mandarin Court is one that I highly recommend.

Their snow skin creations are nowhere near cloying.

Snow skin tends to turn flimsy and sticky after prolonged hours in the humidy, so this is where quality mooncakes shine –even after being left out in room temperature throughout our meal, Mandarin Court’s snow skin mooncakes are still absolutely delectable.

Though usually eaten chilled, I prefer the Mini Snow Skin Raspberry Mooncake eaten at room temperature; comparing to the chilled version that is firmer, the underlying mousse is now pillow soft and velvety smooth.

The tartness of the raspberry actually helps to cut the richness of the mooncake. Those with a sweet tooth may not give their approval though.

Mini Snow Skin Cheese with Citrus Mooncake (8 pieces for $56) –new!

Another new flavour that they have come up with this year is the Mini Snow Skin Cheese with Citrus Mooncake, which is also my personal favourite.

Cheesecake lovers will be enthralled.

Mini Snow Skin Green Tea with Melon Seeds Mooncake (8 pieces for $50)

The vibrant green hue caught my attention –scoring points for visual appeal!

Green tea can be overwhelmingly bitter if employed in profusion, but you won’t find that unpleasant bitterness in this delightful mooncake.

The green-tea infused lotus paste, speckled with crunchy melon seeds, is aromatic and not too sweet. This is my second favourite after the Mini Snow Skin Cheese with Citrus Mooncake.

Mini Snow Skin Lychee Martini Mooncake (8 pieces for $52)

Alcohol enthusiasts will not feel left out with the sensational Mini Snow Skin Lychee Martini Mooncake. This flavour garnered a good deal of compliments across the table.

Assorted Mini Snow Skin Selection (8 pieces for $58)

For a taste of all the snow-skin delights, the Assorted Mini Snow Skin Selection – that contains two of each flavour of snow skin mooncake – will satisfy every part of your taste buds.

Baked Mooncake with Macadamia Nuts and Low Sugar White Lotus Paste (4 pieces for $55)

Mandarin Court’s snow skin mooncakes fared well. Their traditional baked mooncakes do not disappoint either.

For maximal enjoyment but with a touch less of guilt, the Baked Mooncake with Macadamia Nuts and Low Sugar White Lotus Paste comes with lower sugar content and will not cause a steep rise in blood sugar levels.

Baked Mooncake with Mixed Nuts and Jamon Iberico (4 pieces for $62)

The Baked Mooncake with Mixed Nuts and Jamon Iberico is a multi-textured mooncake with a blend of sweet and salty –it is a twist from the traditional version that uses Chinese preserved ham (金华火腿) instead of this Spanish cured ham (Jamon Iberico).

Baked Mooncake with Single Yolk and White Lotus Paste (4 pieces for $55)

I’ve never fancied mooncakes with egg yolks –until recent times. All thanks to Mandarin Court for igniting my love for it. Now, egg yolks are a must in my baked mooncakes.

Baked Mooncake with Double Yolk and White Lotus Paste (4 pieces for $58)

For double the gusto, go for the Baked Mooncake with Double Yolk and White Lotus Paste.

Mandarin Premium Jewel Box Collection ($138)

The Mandarin Premium Jewel Box Collection is the perfect gift for business associates, friends and family this season, featuring four different traditional gems – Baked Mooncake with Mixed Nuts and Jamon Iberico, Baked Mooncake with Double Yolk and White Lotus Paste, Baked Mooncake with Single Yolk and White Lotus Paste and Baked Mooncake with Macadamia Nuts and Low Sugar White Lotus Paste.

Packed neatly in a majestic looking leather Jewel Box, any recipient’s eyes will light up upon unveiling the treasures within.

Also in the jewel box are tealeaves and a traditional porcelain teacup. Mooncakes are best enjoyed with a cup of fragrant Chinese tea.

Mooncakes will be available at Mandarin Court Chinese Restaurant, Level 35, from 12pm to 10pm from 10 August to 30 September 2012, and at the Deli Counter, Hotel Lobby from 11am to 9pm from 3 September to 30 September 2012.
