(Lunar New Year 2014) Cherry Garden, Mandarin Oriental Singapore

Cherry Garden of Mandarin Oriental Singapore is set to leave a deep impression on diners this Lunar New Year with the Cherry Garden Treasure Pot.

Cherry Garden Treasure Pot ($328 for 6 persons)

Identified as Singapore’s largest Pen Cai (traditional ‘basin dish’), the prodigious Cherry Garden Treasure Pot weighs a hefty 25 kilogrammes and measures up to a jaw-dropping 45 centimetres in diameter. Opulently filled to the brim with superior ingredients such as braised eight-head abalone, lobsters, scallops, sea cucumbers, prawns, dried oysters, conpoy, dace fillet, roasted duck, soy chicken, crispy pork belly, waxed sausages, mushrooms, cabbage and black moss, this has got to be the most impressive version I’ve seen thus far.

Toss the Yu Sheng till it reaches a beautiful mess. Choices include the Triumph Yu Sheng ($128/$192/$256) that comprises lobster, salmon, sliced abalone and black truffle, the Harmonious Yu Sheng ($88/$132/$176) that charms with abalone and bonito flakes, the Harvest Yu Sheng ($88/$132/$176) that mesmerises with fresh lobster and golden leaf flakes, the Prosperity Yu Sheng ($68/$102/$136) that pleases traditionalists with salmon and crispy fish skin, and the healthy and refreshing Garden of Wealth Yu Sheng ($63/$93/$123) encompassing fresh fruits and vegetables.

Steamed Cod Fillet with Waxed Meat and Preserved Vegetables

Set menus range from $118 per person (minimum 6 persons) to $268 per person (individually plated; minimum 2 persons), and $98 per person for the vegetarian set.

Glutinous Rice with Waxed Meats

Mouth-watering possibilities include Hot and Sour Soup with Fresh Lobster Meat, Bird’s Nest with Conpoy in Pumpkin Puree, Trilogy of Wasabi Prawn, Spiced Scallop and Drunken Chicken, and more.

Chilled Almonds and Snow Fungus in Red Dates Soup

Meals are concluded with desserts such as Cream of Avocado served with Walnut Ice Cream, Homemade Organic Black Bean Pudding with Japanese Sesame Ice Cream, Double-Boiled Superior Bird’s Nest with Rock Sugar, Chilled Mango Puree, Sago and Pomelo with Lime Sorbet, and more.

Red Dates Nian Gao ($42; available for takeaway)

The Red Dates Nian Gao is dense but not cloyingly sweet. For variety, the Trio Treasures of Nian Gao ($48) includes the Chinese New Year special radish cake, black sesame nian gao and red dates nian gao.

The Golden Piglet Shortcake with Lotus Paste Filling reminds me so much of Mid Autumn Festival –a welcome addition to the Lunar New Year goodies this year that will positively broaden smiles.

Green Tea Mochi stuffed with Lotus Paste and Macadamia Nuts from Cherry Garden Fortune Gift Box ($48 for 16 pieces)
