Food Republic at 112 Katong

Katong, already a food haven, has now a new addition to the family –Food Republic sets up a new outlet at 112 Katong, hosting a plethora of Singapore’s favourite local delights under one roof, in the comforts of air conditioning and a clean environment.

Food Republic is known for their individualistic themes. The 112 Katong Food Republic, for instance, features a present-day contemporary theme, while the Food Republic Beer Garden features a nostalgic theme adorned with rustic furniture.

Yong Soon You Tiao

You Tiao ($0.90 per piece)

Have breakfast anytime of the day at Food Republic; You Tiao (dough fritters) is a popular breakfast item, usually paired with porridge or soya bean milk. Yong Soon You Tiao renders it just the way I like it –crispy, not too greasy, and not too chewy. It is best eaten hot.

The dough fritters are certified Halal to cater to the Muslim crowd. YAY!

This is the first time in my life dipping You Tiao in soya bean milk. I’ve always thought the combination of the two to be bizarre, but now I’m hooked!

Daddy buys You Tiao on weekends for breakfast. Now, he has to buy an additional item –soya bean milk!

Fu Lin Tofu Yuen

7pcs set with Noodle ($6.80)

Fu Lin Tofu Yuen will take you by surprise –it is not your typical Yong Tau Fu stall.

Resembling a Yong Tau Fu stall, customers get to choose from a variety of traditional Yong Tau Fu ingredients that will be cooked upon order. Their distinguishing feature is their delectable Minced Chicken Mushroom Sauce that harmonises beautifully with any Yong Tau Fu ingredient.

The Ngoh Hiang gets my vote amongst the 7 pieces, for its tender and succulent meat stuffing underneath a crispy golden brown bean curd skin.

Minced Chicken Mushroom Gravy with Noodles

For a complete meal, pair the Yong Tau Fu with Minced Chicken Mushrrom Gravy Noodles. This Yong Tau Fu stall is one-of-a-kind.

Li Xin Teochew Fishball Noodle

Mee Pok (dry) – $4.50

Li Xin Teochew Fishball Noodles make their own chilli sauce, which sets them apart from other Fishball Noodles stalls. The Mee Pok delivers savoury, spicy and sweet nuances that will tantalise your taste buds.

Li Xin’s fishballs are made twice daily, specifically with yellowtail only; the sizeable fishballs are kept chilled in cold water but never frozen. Now that explains why they are so tender and bouncy.

Li Xin is now one of my favourite fishball stalls.

Huat Huat BBQ Chicken Wing

BBQ Chicken Wings ($1.30 per piece, minimum 3 pcs)

Huat Huat BBQ Chicken Wings has over 20 years of history. Experience is apparent in every perfectly executed chicken wings, barbecued to a golden brown with crispy skin embracing succulent meat.

Ingredients are kept fresh and stored under cool temperatures for safe and hygienic consumption.

They are then stir-fried with their special Ma La sauce, comprising over 20 different herbs and spices.

Hot Pot (Triple Set) – $21.90

The Hot Pot will deliver a kick to your taste buds with the spicy and peppery onslaughts. If you can’t take the heat, the chefs will be happy to adjust the “numbness” and spice levels to the minimal.

Ah Yip Herbal Soup

Herbal Duck Drumstick Soup Noodles ($13.50)

Toast with to good health with herbal soups. The founder of Ah Yip Herbal Soup was a physician for more than 10 years. The soup recipes are based on his expertise and knowledge in Chinese herbs –they are healthy and tasty.

The Herbal Duck Drumstick Soup Noodles boast tender duck meat that falls off the bone.

Thye Hong Fried Prawn Noodle

Fried Prawn Noodle ($6.80)

With over 40 years of history, Thye Hong consistently serves Hokkien Mee on specially imported Opei leaves –the leaf lends subtle fragrance that will enhance the taste of the noodles.

The Hokkien Mee is flecked discernible pieces of pork lard that are lightly deep-fried to a light golden with no unpleasant burnt redolence.

112 Katong Food Republic features open kitchens that give diners a clear view of the vibrant culinary actions in the kitchens, showcasing proficient chefs at work.

Indian Express

Flattened bread dough is thrown against the walls of a Tandoori oven, an oven that generates intense heat –that’s the traditional and authentic way of baking Naan that Indian Express exercises.

Butter Chicken with Garlic Naan ($9)

Pair the perfectly charred, crisp, soft, slightly chewy and fragrant Garlic Naan with Butter Chicken.

The Butter Chicken is immersed in a creamy tomato-based sauce that is specked with fennel seeds amongst many other inconspicuous herbs and spices. The flavours are spot on.

Dapur Padang

Nasi Kuning set ($6.90)

The Dapur Padang stall displays a delectable variety of dishes – that will send you to a headspin of indecisiveness – to pair with the fragrant yellow rice.

Bala-bala

If you have room in your tummy, the Bala-bala is a deep-fried fritter composed of vegetables and flour – a popular Indonesian street food – that is simply irresistible!

Reminder to self: Eat in moderation.

Cho Kee Wanton Noodle

Fried Dumpling Spinach Noodle ($7)

The 50-year-old establishment, Cho Kee at Old Airport Road, prevails at 112 Katong, introducing a newly fabricated “coloured noodles”, exclusively created for Food Republic. Spinach, carrot and seaweed flavoured noodles are healthy and inventive offerings that will excite those who’re always in the quest for new eats.

I am particularly fond of deep-fried food. The deep-fried wantons are simply mouth-watering.

Wee Nam Kee Chicken Rice

Wee Nam Kee Hainanese Chicken Rice flagship store is located at 275 Thomson Road, opposite the Novena Church. Famed for its succulent steam and roasted chicken, it was voted the best hawker at the AsiaOne People’s Choice Awards in 2010.

Chicken Rice with Dumpling set ($6.50)

Unlike most Chicken Rice stalls in Singapore that serve chicken rice with an accompanying clear broth, here you can have the option of purchasing a set of Chicken Rice with Dumplings soup. I love dumplings so much that I almost ignored the rice.

Formosa Delights

Dao Xiao Mian (Beef) – $6

Dao Xiao Mian – literally translated as Knife Shaved Noodles – is handmade daily. The dish is characterised by its rustic elements; the thickness of the noodles is consistent, while the lengths of each strand of noodle differ –it is a joy to consume!

Pepper Lunch

Pepper Steak ($15.90)

Fans of Pepper Lunch get to enjoy the full restaurant menu at 112 Katong Food Republic, in addition to the broad spectrum of local cuisine.

Served on a special electromagnetic iron plate, the sizzling steak will turn heads. Cook to your desired doneness, and trickle honey brown sauce for sweetness and tang.

Ice Shop

Chendol ($2.40)

Finally, the most anticipated part of my meal –dessert. Finely shaved ice, doused in Gula Melaka and coconut milk, the Chendol will satisfy your sweet tooth.

I love how it’s served in a glass rather than a bowl; the dessert turns into a delightful icy beverage when it starts to melt.

Thanks Omy.sg and Food Republic for organising this wonderful session for like-minded foodies to revel in scrumptious victuals.
