Paddington House of Pancakes

Malaysian-franchise Paddington House of Pancakes has arrived on our sunny island. As its appellation suggests, you can find an extensive selection of over 100 pancakes – be it sweet or savoury, zesty or spicy – you will be spoilt for choice.

We’ve come across endless parades of all-day breakfast dining establishments, but an all-day pancake-orientated establishment is simply ingenious.

You could walk in and roll the dice, in pursuance of deciding on what to order, but here’s another option: pick your favourite country, or somewhere on the globe you’ve always wanted to visit but haven’t got the chance to. Pancakes are classified in several categories, according to the country of influence.

With Paddington House of Pancakes, it is now feasible to travel around the world in under 80 days (or even lesser if you have a heartier appetite).

Oslo; smoked salmon & cheesy scrambled eggs with grilled zucchini, spicy mashed potato pancakes & sour cream ($18)

First up, we travel to Oslo in Norway. I can immediately associate smoked salmon with Norwegian cuisine. The spicy mashed potato pancake is the epitome of savoury pancakes –the first bite was intriguing, and another immediately beckons.

Lucerne; mixed seafood with creamy tomato sauce & mozzarella ($18)

We disembarked from Norway on a quest to Lucerne of Switzerland, and tasted a beautifully presented galette (a French term that refers to a variety of thin and flat crusty cakes). This gluten-free version is made from organic buckwheat, smothered with a layer of seafood-loaded creamy tomato sauce and enriched with mozzarella.

Dijon; crepes with 250g grilled lamb shoulders, plum & passionfruit mustard dressing ($21)

Our voyage continues at Dijon, an industrial city in eastern central France. Dijon is more than just mustard; it is a city with excellent gastronomic reputation.

In this dish at PHOP, the lamb turned out a tad too tough for my liking, but the amalgamation of plum, passionfruit and mustard is noteworthy.

Alaska; spicy mashed potato pancakes with deep fried breaded crumbled dory & creamy mushroom sauce ($15)

Alaska would be my top pick, be it a travel destination, or this PHOP dish in itself. My visceral attachment to fish persists. The fish is decently executed, with its ample breading, crisp crust and moist flesh. The spicy mashed potato pancake continues to gratify.

Reluctantly, our voyage of savoury pancakes ends here. Each pancake has its own distinctive character –I am so eager to try every single item!

Chocolate chip pancakes with ice cream, marshmalows, nuts & chocolate sauce ($11/$18)

Tiramisu ($8)

For a Tiramisu like no other, try PHOP’s rendition. Instead of the typical sponge fingers, mini pancakes supersede.

Strawberry New York Cheesecake ($8)

Likewise for their Strawberry New York Cheesecake; the cakes come in the form of mini pancakes. Layered with cream, strawberries and syrup in a glass, its presentation resembles a trifle.

Chocolate Roll with peanut butter, ice cream, oreo crumbs, chocolate sauce, nuts & whipped cream ($13)

The Chocolate Roll is a popular option amongst locals, but I shun it like plague for I’m the least ardent fan of nuts. This dessert reminds us of a local snack, Min Jiang Kueh.

Bombon Dollars; doller pancakes with oreo & digestive crumbs, raisins, nuts & condensed milk ($12)

Bombon Dollars come in a generous portion, most recommended for sharing. It was a tad dry and boring, and it almost felt like a chore to finish the entire bowl –until we drizzled condensed milk all over, we couldn’t stop eating.
