East Ocean Teochew Restaurant (Weekday Set Dinner @ $98++ for 4 pax)

A Chinese restaurant easily discovered by Takashimaya dwellers but also often overlooked, East Ocean Teochew Restaurant now rolls out an attractive 6-course set dinner designed to appeal to groups of 4 at $98++. Let me break it down for you: it’s $24.50++ per person, $4++ per course. Of course nobody’s going to stop you from eating two persons’ portion if you go in pairs (like I did).

Teochew & Cantonese Three Kinds of Soyed Assortment (Jelly Fish, Soya Sauce Chicken and Sliced Soyed Duck)

A simple but fail-proof appetiser, the platter of Jelly Fish, Soya Sauce Chicken and Sliced Soyed Duck will keep mouths busy and heads nodding in consent.

Double Boiled Chicken Soup with Sea Whelk & Fish Maw

Obligatory at dinner tables of the Chinese, a piping hot bowl of soup – double boiled chicken soup with sea whelk and fish maw in this case – is bound to take any stress away for that moment.

Stewed Soon Hock with Dried Beancurd Skin & Roast Pork

It wouldn’t be an offense to say that Teochews love fish, especially steamed fish, because they do not only enjoy eating it, they cook it well too. East Ocean tends to be a little ambitious here, stirring things up with the addition of roasted pork belly, mushroom and dried beancurd skin amongst other ingredients in the stew.

Not that I’m complaining (because I quite enjoyed the variety of ingredients in this dish), but austere Teochews might like to stick to the good all-time favourite steamed fish. What do you think?

Live Prawns with Vermicelli in Claypot

The Live Prawns with Vermicelli in Claypot is a highlight. When they say ‘live prawns’, they really just mean that the prawns were still alive and drifting about in the waters before being cooked –rest assured they won’t be wriggling on your plates.

As fresh as you can get, prawns are de-shelled for easy eating. Nestling beneath the prawns is the ingratiatingly flavourful vermicelli.

Chilled Honey Dew Sago

In the fullness of time, there comes the Chilled Honey Dew Sago to end the meal on a sweet note.

This is the kind of meal where you won’t walk out of the restaurant needing to fill up the stomach with supper –satisfying without having to break the bank.

The 6-course dinner special is available from Mondays to Fridays, 6pm to 11pm, excluding Eve of Public Holidays and Public Holidays, priced at $98++ for 4 persons. Dine-in only.
