A taste of Taiwan at Feast@East Buffet Restaurant

I have been craving for Taiwanese food ever since my recent trip to Taipei. That trip was one I’d been anticipating for a long time.

I spent my evenings and nights in Taipei conquering night markets, indulging in the endless spectrum of street food.

Oh how I miss the food there…

From 19 to 28 October 2012, Feast@East Buffet Restaurant in Grand Mercure Roxy Singapore brings you “The Best of Taiwan Legacy” –a gastronomic showcase of authentic Taiwanese dishes.

Hosting the lunch and dinner crowd for two weeks is Guest Chef Chiu Lim, hailing from Taiwan, with over 40 years of culinary experience in Taiwanese cuisine.

On the menu are well-loved Taiwanese street foods such as Taiwanese-style Oyster Omelette, Crispy Chicken Cutlet and Oyster Mee Sua amongst others.

Oyster Mee Sua

The familiar flavours of the Oyster Mee Sua transports me back to the streets of Shih Lin Night Market. The oysters, especially, were executed just the way I remembered it to be.

Taiwan Steamed Crab with Glutinous Rice

Besides the ubiquitous street foods, Chef Chiu also brings traditional Taiwanese dishes to the buffet spread, such as Steamed Fish with Crispy Beans, Taiwan Steamed Crab with Glutinous Rice, Braised Minced Pork with Rice and Salted Egg Chicken Roll.

Guests are also entitled to one glass of imported Taiwanese Papaya Milk. I am so in love with this drink!

Marinated Mussels

Salted Egg Chicken Roll

Cold Tofu with Century Egg

Fried Salmon Skin

Taiwanese Sausage

Taiwanese-style Soup

Steamed Fish with Pineapple

Taiwan Meat Balls

Taiwanese Meatballs are in no way similar to the meatballs that we’re familiar with in Singapore. They comprise a thick starchy layer (a texture similar to ‘soon kueh’) encasing minced meat.

After the meatball is steamed, it is cooked in low-temperature oil till the starch softens. They are then taken out, drained, and cut with scissors into bite-sized pieces before dousing with sweet sauce and several other toppings.

Just like what I had in Taipei… Thank you for bringing this to Singapore!

Apart from the Taiwanese spread, there are other dishes such as Beef Stew, Braised Pork Belly with Bamboo Shoot and Stir-Fried Chicken with Basil Leaf.

The fresh sashimi and huge juicy oysters will give the best bang for the buck.

For dessert, Taiwanese selections include Pineapple Cookies, Mochi and Snow Ice.

The Pineapple Cookies is a must-have!

Grass Jelly dessert with Sweet Potato and Yam Balls

Grass jelly is cooked down to a thick ‘soupy’ consistency, suspended with chewy starchy balls within. It was love at first sip. I had three bowls of this!

Mango Pudding

Mochi

The Snow Ice dessert is highly recommended. It’s a healthy dessert you can afford to indulge in after a heavy meal –it is low-fat, low in calories, starch free and made using 100% natural ingredients.

The ‘penguin’ snow ice machine is brought in specially for this Taiwanese-themed buffet. It churns out perfectly smooth and creamy shaved ice from a block of flavoured ice cream.

Toppings include walnut, mango, peach, pineapple and jackfruit.

The mango-flavoured snow ice is divine. Head down to Feast@East Buffet Restaurant and try it before the ‘penguin’ waddles away.
