Appreciation Lunch for Kreta Ayer Elderly hosted by APBS at Violet Oon’s Kitchen

The ‘Cookies for Charity’ programme was a huge success, raising over $20,000 to support the needy elderly of the Kreta Ayer constituency.

Following its success, Asia Pacific Breweries Singapore (APBS) hosted an appreciation lunch for 60 elderly folks from the Kreta Ayer Seniors Activity Centre at Violet Oon’s Kitchen, where they were treated to a sumptuous Lunar New Year meal.

It was my greatest pleasure to witness such a heart-warming sight. The candid smiles displayed on the elderly folks’ faces are priceless.

Celebrity Chef Violet Oon prepared a menu comprising tantalising Nonya festive delights, which include an exquisite Nonya Salmon Yu Sheng, Ngoh Hiang, Hee Peow Soup, Babi Pong Tay, Fish Tempra and more.

Hearts were filled with joy, as everyone tossed the Nonya Salmon Yu Sheng.

Nonya Salmon Yu Sheng

Ngoh Hiang

Violet Oon’s Ngoh Hiang is one of the best I’ve ever had, if not the best. The meat roll is steamed till evenly cooked, before slicing and coating with tapioca flour, and fried to crispy perfection. It comes with a side of sweet sauce and a potent belachan chilli paste.

Violet Oon made the belachan from scratch –and it is no easy feat. Unlike the watery belachan you commonly get, belachan here is drained for an hour till it’s thick and half of its original weight.

Hee Peow Soup

Violet Oon has also thoughtfully tweaked the recipe of the Hee Peow Soup with the health of the elderly folks in mind. Although this healthier version contains less salt, the flavours were intense; flavours from the ingredients were fully extracted through hours of boiling.

Violet Oon also prepared several dishes that go perfectly with rice.

The Fish Tempra is topped with caramelised shallots in dark sauce and hints of chilli. Great touch!

Nonya Chup Chye

I love her rendition of this vegetable dish. This has got to be the first time I found vegetables to be highly addictive! Soft and full of flavour… This is comfort food for me.

Babi Pong Tay

The Babi Pong Tay is another noteworthy dish. It just brought me a step closer to my peranakan roots with a mere whiff.

“Long Life” Nyonya Mah Mee

An aptly named auspicious dish to serve during this festive celebration would be the “Long Life” Nyonya Mah Mee. Violet Oon also revealed the recipe for this dish, and I’m definitely going to try cooking it one day!

Without a doubt, the elderly folks enjoyed the meal and the company of Violet Oon and the representatives from APBS whom they are all familiar with.

Violet Oon even took a trip down to a CD shop the day before the event, just to purchase a Teresa Teng album. The music radiates the restaurant with nostalgia, as the folks danced and sang along to familiar tunes.

It was such an honour spending the afternoon with the celebrity Chef whom I’ve heard so much about!

Thanks Oglivy Public Relations for this opportunity.
