KU DÉ TA (Lunch Bento Sets), Sands SkyPark

I’ve always wanted to visit the SkyPark since its opening, but haven’t had the opportunity to; KU DÉ TA tops my list of ‘haven’t-visited-and-want-to-dine-at’ places.

I can finally strike this item off the list.

Just before my trip to Taipei, mum brought me out for lunch at KU DÉ TA.

She went there for lunch the week before, with my aunt (her sister), and she absolutely loved the atmosphere. Knowing that I haven’t been there, she decided to bring me!

Tickets to the Sands SkyPark Public Observation Deck costs $20 for adults, $17 for senior citizens 65 years and above, and $14 for children between 2-12 years, but diners of KU DÉ TA get free access.

The view from the observation deck is simply breathtaking.

Business is brisk even on a weekday lunch. Do make reservations.

Streaming into the restaurant is a vast amount of sunlight, through full-length windows that surround the entire dining area –providing a bright, airy and soothing atmosphere.

The indoor bar is the perfect spot for city dwellers looking to slow down their pace and sip on cocktails.

It is never too early for cocktails here.

Lunch Bento Sets

Mum and I had a Bento Set each, which is available for lunch from 12pm to 3pm on weekdays.

Bento Set with Tiger Prawn Tempura ($38++)

The bento set, priced at $38++ each, and comes with a choice of main atop steamed akitakomachi rice, and sided with salmon sashimi, braised zucchini, mesclun salad, house cured pickles, a soup and a dessert.

Instead of a Miso Soup, we were served the Old Cucumber & Daikon Broth. It is a little on the saltier side, but still delightful to slurp down to the last drop.

The citrus-infused pickles are decent; fresh and crunchy, unlike what I expect preserved food to be, but still sour like how pickles are meant to be –always a tad too sour for my weak aversion to tartness.

The Mesclun Salad was really good. I don’t like greens at all, but I absolutely loved the sweet sesame dressing that gives the tasteless greens an aromatic lift. I successfully polished off the greens. The taste of sweetness in itself has the effect of stimulating the appetite.

The braised zucchini is scantly infused with saikyo miso and mirin –so subtle my palate could not detect any other flavours other than from the purest form of zucchini. It makes for a refreshing component to a well-balanced meal nevertheless.

A couple slices of salmon sashimi rest on a bed of thinly julienned green apple, drizzled with a creamy dressing that is highly appetising.

For the mains, there are three options to choose from: meat, seafood and vegetarian.

Though I’m not a huge fan of seafood, the Tiger Prawn Tempura with Japanese Curry Sauce sounds more enticing to me than the other options. I love anything that’s tempura-battered, thus my decision was instant.

I didn’t regret my decision one bit!

It is one of the best prawn tempura I had in a long time.

The prawn is plump and succulent –and not to mention, of the freshest quality.

The pairing of tempura and Japanese curry sauce is a pretty unique though unconventional –it works wonderfully well.

With the premium akitakomachi organic rice, I inevitably ate more rice than I normally would; it is plump and moist without being mushy.

Bento Set with Robata Grilled Chicken, Tom Yam Style ($38++)

Mum had the Robata Grilled Chicken for the mains. She had fish the last time she came here, so this time round, she ventured into poultry. She was raving about the fish so much that I was slightly disappointed when it wasn’t on the menu that day.

This dish failed to impress me.

The meat itself barely carried any flavour; the glossy tom yam infused sauce plays the major role in providing taste to the otherwise insipid chicken.

Dessert was the most highly anticipated part of the meal for me.

This dessert is a wonderful closing note on the meal. Light on the stomach, it comprises petite-sized modules that are lined up in a sequence of varied textures.

The cream is slightly sweet and lusciously dense, but specked with bits of yuzu peel to cut the richness –my favourite component of the dessert.

Sitting next to it is a black sesame cake. It is very dry –so dry that it makes the cream even more desirable.

Juicy honeydew is dressed up in foam, which disappointingly carried no flavour. It sure makes the dessert look even more aesthetically pleasing though.

After your meal, you can proceed to the Sands SkyPark for a stroll.

Enjoy an unobstructed 360-degree panoramic view of the city’s skyline, and spot familiar sights such as the Supertrees sprouting from Gardens by the Bay, the Singapore Flyer (a giant observation wheel), Float@Marina Bay (the world’s first floating stage) and the ArtScience Museum (with a stunning architecture in a form of a lotus flower).
