Swensen’s Ice Cream Mooncakes

Does this motif look familiar to you?

You don’t need an eidetic memory for Swensen’s trademark tiffany lamp to come to mind, I’m sure…

Swensen’s has been a huge part of most of our childhoods; its tiffany lamp is endowed with a striking familiarity that we will never fail to recognise.

Apart from the richly coloured print that resembles their signature stained glass, I especially love the little ‘window’ with detailed cut-out patterns on the cover.

With Mid-Autumn Festival nearing, it is not difficult to guess what’s inside this beautifully resplendent case.

For those born before 1990, our childhood memories do not comprise of fancy ice cream parlours like Cold Stone Creamery, Ben & Jerry’s and Baskin Robbins, or the low-keyed cafés such as Udders and Scoop of Art. Swensen’s is the go-to place for family gatherings because we all loved to end our meals with ice cream don’t we?

This Mid-Autumn Festival, it is no surprise that ice cream mooncakes are taking centre stage at Swensen’s.

There are six flavours in total: Strawberry Fields Forever, Durian Royale, Yummy Yam, Sticky Chewy Chocolate, Cookies ‘N’ Cream Dreams and Mocha Almond Delight.

Here are the four flavours that I’ve tried.

Sticky Chewy Chocolate

The all-time favourite sticky chewy chocolate flavour is now transmuted into a mooncake by encasing the ice cream in snow skin. This richly and densely packed mooncake will satisfy chocolate lovers.

Cookies ‘N’ Cream

The Cookies ‘N’ Cream is a personal favourite. Kids will love this. I am a kid at heart. I love this.

One great thing about their ice cream mooncakes is that they don’t melt into a pool of mess that quickly. You still have time to take photos, change your shooting angle, take more shots, admire a little longer, before digging in.

Yummy Yam

Don’t worry; this is not a murder scene. Though maybe the mooncake is to-kill-for. Don’t snatch.

The Yummy Yam is my second favourite after the Cookies ‘N’ Cream.

The ice cream is smooth and creamy…….

Durian Royale

Durian lovers, go for the Durian Royale. It has a stinky durian ‘smell’ the moment you slice it open –an acquired ‘smell’ that you either love it or you don’t. I happen to be the rare few who, sometimes dislike it but sometimes find it bearable. I ate the entire mooncake with no complaints. Cold and creamy…. Mmmm….

Dry ice is added in the packaging to keep the ice cream mooncakes cool, and for that icy dreamy effect.

Available from now till 30 September 2012, these mooncakes are priced at $29.80 for a box of any four flavours. Feel free to mix and match! You can also purchase individual pieces at $8.60 each. Price is inclusive of GST.

Diners will enjoy an early bird promotion of 15% off with major credit cards when they purchase mooncakes before 9 September 2012.
