We dined at Singapore Marriott Hotel’s Pool Grill and saved $70, thanks to the Entertainer App

Finding a tranquil dining spot in the core of an active city like Orchard Road poses as a challenge, but not unimaginable with the well-concealed gem like Pool Grill, perched on the fifth level of Singapore Marriot Hotel, adjacent to the outdoor pool.

Pool Grill is where you dine al fresco in a sophisticated resort-like setting that brims with romantic vibrancy –perfect for anniversaries and proposals.

Marinated ½ Baby Chicken ($29; 300grams)

Prices for mains range from $28 for a vegetarian Mushroom Risotto, to $68 for a 400-day grain-fed Australian Wagyu Rib-Eye steak. Not the most affordable dining option in town, but the quality and portion justify its prices.

Online deals, credit card promotions and discounts prove to successfully entice visitors. I for one am drawn to restaurants listed in the Entertainer App, where I get to enjoy buy-one-get-one-free for main courses. I have previously dined at Hummerstons, The Pelican Seafood Bar & Grill, and Buyan Russian Restaurant & Caviar Bar; using the Entertainer App, I’ve saved more than $250 thus far. The app costs just $67!

Glazed Lemon Tart with Nut Tortilla and Vanilla Chantilly Cream ($14.50)

There are over 990 buy-one-get-one-free vouchers for restaurants, nightspots, spas, activities, attractions and more, plus over 380 free night voucher offers for hotels and resorts throughout Asia & Indian Ocean. I’ve even utilised the buy-one-get-one-free voucher at informal f&b spots such as Dunkin Donuts, Popeyes, ShareTea, and Ben & Jerry’s.

This time round, thanks to the Entertainer App, I saved approximately $70 at Pool Grill.

Yellowfin Tuna Tartare ($20)

Our meal commenced on a high note with the pristine Yellowfin Tuna Tartare that arrives with crisp crouton, fresh horseradish crème fraiche and an invigorating drizzle of lemon oil. Clean, fresh flavours; effortlessly divine. Continue reading

Osia rolls out a New Menu (Available from January to March 2014)

Resorts World Sentosa’s award-winning restaurant Osia rolls out a new menu to usher in a brand new year. The new menu by Chef de Cuisine Douglas Tay showcases contemporary western dishes characterised by natural flavours and essences from ingredients that are sourced from all over the world. Creativity and passion prevails throughout the dishes.

Seafood Ice Experience ($36)

The distinctive Seafood Ice Experience has been revamped to the following: Watermelon Raspberry Vinegar with Amaebi; Calamansi Mojito with Hokkaido Scallop; Sourz Apple with Salmon Trout; Coconut with Maine Lobster; Pineapple Rum with Tuna; and Lychee Martini with Oyster.

A commingling of fruity sweetness and oceanic brininess, the Lychee Martini with Oyster is exceedingly popular with the ladies, and is also my personal favourite.

Hokkaido Scallop ($40)

The citrus-cured Hokkaido Scallop galvanised with cauliflower cream, black truffle salsa and seaweed vinaigrette is amongst the “must-tries”. Justice is done to the freshness and succulence of the scallop.

Platters Bistro & Wine Bar collaborates with Chef Jeremy Nguee (November 2013 to February 2014)

Introduced more than a year ago, Platters Bistro & Wine Bar continues bringing excitement to the ‘dine and share’ concept with its unique Chef-Designed series, where the menu is re-designed every four months by a new guest chef.

From now till the end of February 2014, the spotlight is on Chef Jeremy Nguee, chef-owner of Preparazzi. A shining star in the catering industry in Singapore, he was also the official caterer for the recent Dinner En Blanc.

Gourmet healthy food is the focal point and a mainstay in Chef Jeremy’s line of work. Sounds painful to be deprived of deep-fried munchies and comfort food huh.

This collaboration gives Chef Jeremy a nod and a rare opportunity to be adventurous and creative, without a care of how artery clogging it may be, showcasing his love for comfort food, and what he truly is deep inside.

The theme this round is based on sinful indulgence and full flavours, nicknamed the #fatdieyou series. The nickname came across as off-putting to me initially, but the moment the food reaches my palate, the apprehensiveness is dispelled.

Thunder Thighs & Crackpot Rice ($36/$68)

The Thunder Thighs & Crackpot Rice consists of meaty and succulent French frog legs (‘Cuisses de Grenouille’) and soft shell crabs that are battered and deep-fried, accompanied by tobiko, hollandaise and bacon, sided with crab roe rice that’s cooked with pork lard –so sinful but so flavourful.

The ambitiously massive venue spans 17,000 square feet of total ground area, encompassing an indoor and an outdoor café, four multi-function rooms and a bar.

Pumpkin Hazelnut Fries ($12)

Allow conversations to flow freely as you begin the meal by munching on these delectable Pumpkin Hazelnut Fries –straw-cut pumpkin fries coated in crunchy hazelnut, paprika and chilli powder, or the fragrant and delightfully crisp Truffle Taro Fries ($8) that are highly addictive as well.

Asparagus, Serrano Ham and Crumbed Egg ($24)

Laksa Food Trail with OpenRice and CDC

Laksa is one of Singapore’s most loved local delights. Speak of laksa and conversations flow endlessly with what variants of laksa one prefers. Some like it rich, some like it extra spicy, some like it without hum (cockles), some like it with lots of them, some like it with thick rice noodles, some like it with thin vermicelli. So what pleases your palate most?

Growing up, I used to order laksa without cockles, as my unadventurous palate refuses to step out of its comfort zone and cockles have always seemed alien to me. It was only in recent times that I allowed my teeth to sink into a cockle, and it happened to be one of the juiciest and freshest morsels I could ever imagine in a humble bowl of laksa; it was then that I decided I would not omit cockles from laksa. Never regretted that decision one bit.

Sungei Road Laksa
Jin Shui Kopitiam, Blk 27 Jalan Berseh #01-100, Jalan Besar, Singapore 200027

Sungei Road Laksa has one of the freshest and juiciest cockles, which come in generous portions, nestled atop thick slurpable rice noodles steeped in piping hot broth. The broth is thin and a tad watery, but some prefer it this way as it is less cloying. Plus, it is so tasty I could drink it like soup! Continue reading
