香港街珍记

Deep-fried pork fat- we couldn’t stop munching on these like tidbits.

Broccoli came out crunchy. I know that’s the way it’s supposed to be, but as a non-veggie lover, I prefer them VERY soft and overcooked :P

I like how thick each piece of fish is.

My Favorite Deep-fried dough fritters stuffed with cuttlefish paste
“MORE MAYONNAISE PLEASE!!!” :D

The last time I ate this was when I was in Primary School. I remember loving it soooo much and wondering why I never got to eat it over the years. Then I realize I can only have it at Zi Char stalls. That explains it.

Another fish dish.

XO Fish BeeHoon- restrain yourself from drinking the entire bowl of soup by yourself, the XO Soup is somewhat intoxicating :)

Egg Fu Yong- tasty.. :)

I know I’m a Sua Ku Singaporean, but this is the first time I’m eating an ‘Egg Fu Yong’.

Prawns, beancurd, vegetables etc in claypot

everything remained warm in the claypot; a very good insulator.

Homemade Deep-Fried Beancurd (My top pick!)

The bill came up to about $70; its cheap considering we ordered so many dishes!
Food didn’t disappoint. I’ll definitely return.

Old Hong Kong Taste

We went to the outlet located at Serangoon Garden Maju Ave, The Village.
Note: Parking lots not abundantly available.

Soup of the day – We had a Wintermelon Soup with Chicken and Pork
My friend and I enjoyed this soup! Homely, nourishing and most importantly, TASTY!

Deepfried ToFu- It is nothing spectacular; a dish you can find almost everywhere! BUT it is highly irresistible! At least, for me, because I love anything that is deep-fried and melts-in-the-mouth. This dish makes the cut.

Deepfried Shrimp Dumplings- Bite into the crispy golden brown skin to find prawns that are crunchy, succulent and fresh. Paired with a sweet sauce, this dish is yummy, but not memorable.

XO Carrot Cake- I loved this dish a lot! Well, I love carrot cakes in general. Their rendition didn’t suck; I could even finish a second serving if it was placed in front of me. Flavorful and tasty describes this dish. I have nothing to complain except the portion size may not be enough since its so delicious :)

I can’t remember the exact name of this dish, but it consists of beancurd (Tau Pok) and eggs. The braising sauce is overly salty, I certainly wouldn’t recommend this dish especially to those who’re watching their sodium intake. Personally, I’ve never liked Tau Pok, and there’s nothing impressive about this dish at all.

Seafood thick soup- I enjoyed this soup! I love thick soups, its getting personal here!

$5.80 for one Xiao Long Bao seems exorbitant, although they mentioned the use of crab meat in the fillings. I’m no fan of crabs so that idea wouldn’t sell to me BUT xiao long baos are my weakness regardless of the fillings. I enjoyed this :)

The bill came up to $130 which wasn’t exactly cheap for 2 of us.
Would I return? Maybe. If I have a huge craving for Hong Kong cuisine, and if I have too much money to spare, since I live pretty near by.

HungryBBQ

Feeling lazy to do the BBQ-ing yourself? HungryBBQ is one solution where they provide BBQ services.

Overall, the service is great, with an experienced BBQ guy. fuss-free with all things provided.
the fish could have been more tender but the sauce is delicious.
Not sure if it is truly worth the price.. after all, the fun in BBQ gatherings lies in the BBQ-ing itself!
Thanks Glenn for the invitation!

Happy birthday to all October Babies!

Bought a cuppa cake for my aunt only to realize it’s my other aunt’s birthday the next day!

Here’s wishing all October babies a Happy Birthday!
Especially Mummy, Daddy, my aunts and cousin.

Taste Of Thailand – Chong Pang

No reservations can be made on weekends. Thankfully, my parents and I arrived 45 minutes prior to the agreed meeting time, thus we took a queue number on behalf of my aunt and walked around the neighborhood. At 6.30pm, my aunts arrived and our orders were taken outside the restaurant before we were ushered to our table- Their policy being “No Order, No Table.” Their service can be quite intimidating. The waitresses are not the most courteous bunch.

There is indoor and outdoor seating, we chose the former with air conditioning.

Once seated, food started coming out almost immediately, plate after plate, I felt like we were rushed into eating. One of my aunt hasn’t even arrived! Our initial plan was to secure a table in the restaurant and wait for my aunt but guess we had to start eating lest the food turns cold. Luckily she arrived shortly after.

There were 10 of us, thus we ordered the Large portion for each dish.

Deep fried Cuttlefish – tasty & nicely crisp! not the most tender cuttlefish I’ve had but this is acceptable.

Pineapple rice – a little dry for my liking but its a personal preference. I like my rice done unconventionally :) texture aside, the floss topping tasted decent. I’d prefer more ingredients though. (not sure about the authenticity of thai pineapple rice)

Fried Tang Hoon – Again, a little dry for my liking but it’s a personal preference. Taste-wise, yummy.

Deep Fried Fish – We ordered 2 servings, definitely one of the highlights of the evening. Everyone seemed to love it! Perfectly fried with a crispy coating without drying out the flesh of the fish.

I have no idea what veggie this is, but I didn’t care for the greens! Moving on……!

Hot Plate Tofu – With a slight hint of spice! One of my favorite dishes! Not because its anything spectacular but because I love this dish in general. I can get it at any Chinese zi char stall though. I don’t see the relation with thai food! maybe the spice… idk! I’m not complaining because its yummy. We ordered a second serving because it just wasn’t enough! :)

Steamed Cod Fish with Soya Sauce – We ordered 2 servings as well because I took a lot of it :P Again, I don’t see the relation to Thai food but the cod is soooo perfectly tender! No frills, simple cooking. I loved it not because they did an extraordinary rendition, but because I love cod fish in general. But at least they didn’t screw it up! :)

We ordered a large portion of Tom Yum Soup as well, plentiful ingredients inside- sliced fish, squids, prawns. It’s not too spicy, just enough to tinkle the taste buds! It’s tasty but I’m not sure if i can call it exceptionally good.

We ordered a fish maw thick soup as well but mysteriously I didn’t get it on my camera. Probably too busy indulging! I loved it though! Soups are my weakness, and this is one pretty good soup!

After dinner, needless to say we were prompted to make our departure due to the crowd waiting outside the restaurant.

To sum it up, I wasn’t super impressed but I wouldn’t mind going back. Simple fare, tasty and affordable is how I’ll describe this restaurant.
