Pies & Coffee

My memories of pies date back to the days in high school, where I would purchase POLAR Chicken Pies from petrol kiosks out of sheer convenience.

The pie scene in Singapore isn’t huge. We don’t have many choices.

Not until Pies & Coffee came into the picture.

Set in an idyllic location surrounded by greenery at – a stone’s throw away from Buona Vista MRT stationPies & Coffee is the first café in Singapore to specialise in gourmet pies.

It is also the first café in Singapore to use commercial air-infusion coffee machine; the single-cup brewing system produces a distinct coffee brew that exhibits a fuller body and deep aroma.

Café Latte (7oz, $4.80)

Its appealing cheap fares warrant the attention of budget travellers –the unsettling backpackers, the cautious spenders, the non-working students, and the young-at-heart retirees.

Soup Guru @ Food Republic 313 Somerset

The most comforting soups are cooked with love, in a humble home.

Unfortunately, due to the progression and development of our nation, working adults are too caught up with their hectic lifestyle and are too busy to step foot into the neglected kitchen –unlike the olden days when men were the sole breadwinners in their families and women await their husbands’ return from a long day at work, to a spread of lovingly-home-cooked meal.

At home, parents meddling with the kitchen tools are a rare sight; we own an electric double boiler and a thermal cooker that we hardly utilise at all.

Soup Guru will be a hit amongst the working bunch in the bustling city, offering a wide selection of soups that will remind one of home.

The budding chain aims to promote the culture of soup drinking by making it more accessible and affordable.

Yong Soon You Tiao

You Tiao ($0.90 per piece)

Have breakfast anytime of the day at Food Republic; You Tiao (dough fritters) is a popular breakfast item, usually paired with porridge or soya bean milk. Yong Soon You Tiao renders it just the way I like it –crispy, not too greasy, and not too chewy. It is best eaten hot.

The dough fritters are certified Halal to cater to the Muslim crowd. YAY!

Bumbu Thai-Indonesian Restaurant

I was in the Arab Street vicinity, where I attended the media launch of the Very Short International Film Festival 2012. Having absolutely no dinner plans made, we resorted to the HungryGoWhere iPhone app in search of a place to pacify my grumbling tummy.

My foodie friend, Derrick (SgFoodOnFoot), then suggested Bumbu, which is a few steps down the road from Objectifs.

Bumbu is situated in the Kampong Glam enclave on Kandahar Street, housed in a quaint and historical shophouse. Having featured on our local Channel 8 television show – the Buffet Buffet season 2《永远吃不肥2 》 categorised under the “below $20 buffet dinner” – this restaurant is bustling with activity.
