Food Revolution Day at The Lawn

Jamie Oliver Foundation launched its first-ever Food Revolution Day on 19 May 2012; a global day of action to inspire, educate and empower people all over the world to stand up for real food.

Singapore’s Food Revolution Day was held at The Lawn, happening correspondingly with 30 countries, 285 cities –same festival, same objectives, just different venues, and time zones.

Check out my previous post on what Food Revolution Day is all about: https://melicacy.com/?p=3807

The event was a great success! Huge thanks to The Lawn for sponsoring the venue and a big thank you to those who showed up.

People from all walks of life, gaining insights on healthy eating; making new friends with like-minded foodies; enjoying the fun and festive events sedulously organised by the FoodrevSG team, made all the hard work worthwhile. Kudos to the team!

Resorts World Genting with omy.sg (Day 1)

5 lucky omy.sg bloggers were chosen to go on a 3D2N trip to Genting!

The theme is ‘love’ and our mums were invited along for a pampering retreat.

I have been to Genting once, when I was a toddler –so young I can’t even recall.

Mum is an ambitious woman. She is my heroine; someone I admire; someone I idolise; someone I look up to. But because of her hectic schedule, we hardly spend time together. She drives me to events in between her meetings and appointments, but that’s about the amount of time we spend together: the journey in the car.

The objective of this trip is to spend more quality time together, take many photos and videos for memory keepsakes, and to also share with you our wonderful memories in Genting on my blog.

I’ve compiled snippets of videos to summarise my Genting trip, split into two separate videos: Day 1 and Day 2-3.

Day 1

1.30pm: Check in at First World Hotel
2pm: Lunch at Ming Ren (Check out my review of Ming Ren here: https://melicacy.com/?p=3864)
3pm: Free & Easy
7.30pm: Dinner at Genting Palace (Check out my review of Genting Palace Restaurant here: https://melicacy.com/?p=3856)

We boarded a Five Stars Travel coach that departed from Golden Mile at 6.30am, with two stopovers for refreshments and toilet breaks along the approximately-5-and-a-half-hour journey.

Resorts World Genting with omy.sg – Day 2 and 3

The trip was indeed memorable. My impression of Genting – a casino gaming destination – is banished. It’s a holiday destination that panders to people from all walks of life and a wide range of activities to cater to people of all ages.

Apart from 3 casinos, there are 2 theme parks, countless shopping avenues and over 90 F&B outlets spanned across the mountain resort.

Check out my video from Day 2 and 3!

Day 2

8am: Breakfast at Coffee Terrace (Omg this place is awesome. Not to be missed!)
10am: Theme Park
1pm: Lunch at Hainan Express
3.30pm: M Spa
6pm: Dinner at Happy Valley
8pm: Sam Hui Concert

Day 3

10am: Breakfast at World Club Lounge
11.30pm: Visitors’ Galleria
1pm: Onboard coach back to Singapore

Ming Ren Restaurant -Genting Highlands

Spending a couple days in Genting makes a great gastronomic vacation. Check out my review of Genting Palace Restaurant here: https://melicacy.com/?p=3856

Lunch was at Ming Ren Restaurant –our first meal in Genting. I did a little research prior to the trip; positives reviews and high ratings summed up my search, thus making this my most anticipated meal!

The interior is decidedly oriental with a classy vibe.

Ming Ren was named “The Best Restaurant” by Malaysia Tatler in 2010.

The restaurant serves up authentic Xinjiang cuisine with a unique blend of Cantonese culinary methods.

Caffé B –Fine Italian traditions combined with subtle Japanese flair

The name, Caffé B, misleads one into perceiving this establishment as a casual café – Caffé being enunciated as Café, while Caffè is the Italian word for coffee – but what’s in store will take you by surprise.

Beyond this elegant-yet-industrial-chic portal, surrounded by luxury brands in the basement of Marina Bay Sands, lies an 80-seater fine dining Italian restaurant.

It’s not surprising to discover subtle Japanese influences in their Italian cuisine. The owner of Caffé B is Japanese, while the chef hails from Italy. A Japanese chef used to hold the reins in the kitchen until recent times, so if you have come across previous reviews regarding their Japanese chef, that is history.

Arriving in Bali, Ubud; Petanu River Villa

I booked a return flight to Bali for $252, flying with Air Asia – inclusive of tax and 15kg check-in baggage for each trip – just one week before embarkment. I’ve come across fares as low as $150 inclusive of tax so do keep a lookout for sales fares and book early in advance.

Arriving in Bali

Upon landing, hot and humid weather greeted us.

Wet season begins November to March, while the flow is reserved from April to October.

Our aircraft was unable to park at the terminal for disembarkation (this situation depends on the arrival times and airlines, and this is usually the case for budget airlines), thus we were herded onto a bus that took us to the terminal.

It was a pretty short ride. How nice of them not to make us walk.

I’ve heard so much about Bali being a wonderful exotic holiday retreat, where temples and shrines are aplenty, but I never expected the airport to sport the architecture of a temple.

That totally sets the tone for our vacation and stimulated our anticipation.

The arrival hall isn’t huge, so finding your way around will not be a problem.

McDonald’s Hello Kitty McDonaldland plush toys available islandwide!

Remember them?

The last time we saw Hello Kitty in McDonald’s (in 2000), the campaign – featuring Hello Kitty and Dear Daniel dressed in wedding attires of different cultures – created a mass hysteria amongst Hello Kitty lovers throughout the nation.

I was one of those little girls who made their daddies queue up for them.

The campaign even grasped the attention of opportunists who resold the collectible plushies at high prices.

After 12 long years, Hello Kitty plushies are finally returning to McDonald’s.

In partnership with Sanrio, McDonald’s introduces its first ever McDonaldland Hello Kitty plush toys featuring a series of four Hello Kitty characters each decked out in costumes inspired by McDonaldlanad characters:

Hamburglar Hello Kitty is available from 17 May to 23 May.

Grimace Hello Kitty is available from 24 May to 30 May.

Birdie Hello Kitty is available from 31 May to 6 June.

Ronald Hello Kitty is available from 7 June to 13 June.

15 lucky Omy.sg bloggers had a sneak preview of the plushies before they were officially launched.

Bali, Ubud; a heartwarming experience; an unplanned adventure

Hi all. Bali was where I spent 4 days in.

8th-11th May 2012.

I went to a quieter town in Bali –Ubud. Unlike the busier towns – Kuta and Seminyak – Ubud offers an extra dose of spirituality and tranquillity.

Ubud was where I encountered countless of friendly locals; where I handed out candies to children in their courtyards; where I learnt authentic Balinese cuisine in a local kitchen; where I pulled out a stool and ate from a roadside stall; where I haggled for lower prices at local markets; where I hitched a ride on a local’s motorcycle; where I step foot, for the first time in my life, into a rice paddy field; where I stood by the riverside, observing how the locals fish; where an unplanned vacation turns out to be more than an adventure.

Bali is safe for tourists. Having travelled to other countries where pickpockets and scams are a main concern, Balinese have established a positive set of attitudes that will reap returning tourists.

The definition of Nirvana: a transcendent state of happiness; a state of being free from suffering; an expression affiliated with Buddhism; or it can also be a term often associated with an idyllic place.

Set in a historic conservation Chinatown shop house, Nirvana has its back against the city bustle, offering a relaxing day and night venue with simple bistro fare along with an extensive range of alcohol.
