Dinner with mum: Ristorante PepeNero –Simply Italian

PepeNero means black pepper in Italian.

Ristorante PepeNero is a quaint little restaurant housed in one of the conservative shophouses along Telok Ayer, on Stanley Street to be exact.

As opposed to its appellation, black pepper does not take centre stage at this Italian restaurant. I reassure you, you won’t get a choke-inducing profusion of black pepper that overwhelms each and every dish.

Shi Wei Tian Restaurant (食唯天) (Closed temporarily)

What are the fondest memories of your grandma’s cooking? Was it simply comfort food or did anyone have a Masterchef grandma? My fondest memory of grandma’s cooking was Ngoh Hiang.

Shi Wei Tian Restaurant is a Chinese restaurant located within the food heaven of Eastern Singapore at Joo Chiat Place; this lengthy street is lined with numerous restaurants and eateries. Read on to find out why I would choose Shi Wei Tian Restaurant over its neighbouring competitors.

Restaurateur Ryan Tan’s grandmother hails from Borneo, Malaysia, and his fondest memories of her cooking was a dish called Phoenix Prawn –he used to hate prawns, but his ‘ah ma’ cooks it in a way it resembles chicken wings, tricking him into eating more.

Signature Grandma’s Deep Fried Pork Knuckle ($24.90)

To recreate exclusive dishes from the many handwritten recipes passed down by Ryan’s grandmother, Shi Wei Tian Restaurant engages Chef Meng –whom hails from Batu Pahat, a suburban part of Malaysia, where he’s trained by his mother and grandmother to cook a repertoire of traditional hometown dishes.

Food Republic at Causeway Point

Food Republic opens their 9th outlet at Causeway Point, seating up to 700 to cater to large hungry crowds.

Every Food Republic sports a different theme; Food Republic Beer Garden at St James for instance, sports a ‘60s theme, while Food Republic 112 Katong sports a present-day contemporary theme. Here at Causeway Point, the concept hovers around the idea of an airy and elegant white garden.

With 17 stalls and 3 mini-restaurants under one roof, diners are presented with a wide variety of multi-cultural food, complemented by tasteful ambience and clean environs at affordable prices.

With such a diverse tenant mix, it is quite a challenge to decide on what to order. Here are some of the highlights:

Highlights of Oktoberfest 2012

Oktoberfest 2012 was a blast! As mentioned in the pre-event blurb that I’d be heading down with a couple of friends, we certainly had lots of fun nibbling on great German-themed food, sipping on Erdinger beers, grooving to the live bands, people-watching and playing games at the carnival booths.

The Bosch Dream Kitchen

Cooking appliances that feature state-of-the-art aesthetics and functionalities –who doesn’t want that?

Ever since I ventured into food journalism, I’ve gained lots of culinary insights; stellar dining experiences undoubtedly amplified my interest in the kitchen.

I was never the kid who started cooking at a tender age. I’m tremendously jealous of the talented kids from Junior Masterchef. My parents are busy with work, and having home-cooked meals together are rare occasions.

I’ve never undergone professional culinary training, neither do I have an exceptional trained palate that detects the precise chemical compounds found in a single morsel –all I know is that I have an immense passion for food, and my learning capacity is infinite. I am a keen learner. I do not aspire to be a Michelin-star chef; all I want is to cook with my heart, and enjoy food with my loved ones.

My current kitchen is about 15 years old. The built-in oven has broken down (as much as I’d love to learn how to bake, there’s just this little I can do without an oven); the stoves aren’t at its prime anymore… we can’t figure out what went wrong, but it takes longer than usual to ignite a flame; the fridge… we’ve been contemplating changing it but procrastination just took over… the rubber strip that keeps the door sealed is worn out, leaving little gaps for cool air to escape at times.

I would really love to have a properly equipped kitchen –not only for its aesthetics but also for the functionality that could kick up my cooking skills up a notch. The current kitchen that we have… simply limits my learning potential.

A brand new kitchen would also bring the family closer… somewhere my parents can look forward to coming home, spend a little time cooking together, having a nice cosy meal together… Friends who come over for potluck will also be able to have more fun in the kitchen.

Would you care to spare a vote for Mum and I in the Bosch Dream Kitchen Cookoff contest? The top 4 groups with the highest votes will get to cook and compete to win the dream kitchen; voting ends 1 November 2012.

Vote for us (Team 3) here: http://www.boschdreamkitchen.com/cookOff.html?teamid=3#.UH-Vv8Wsh8E

Voters get to win daily prizes as well! I hope you’ll win something too.

Every vote counts, and we appreciate your support.

Mum and I have never cooked together in the kitchen (other than in the audition video), and this will be an experience of a lifetime.

Hong Kong Wine & Dine Month, 1 to 30 November 2012

The essence of Hong Kong is subtly but surely incorporated into most of our daily lives –for instance, our obsession with dim sum and our addiction to Hong Kong TVB series is of widespread unanimity.

Being a 4-hour flight away from Singapore, many Singaporeans visit Hong Kong on a yearly basis, mostly for the love of food and shopping. Come November, the Wine and Dine Month gives you all the more reason to visit this vibrant city; the month-long festival will showcase a series of events ranging from food, drama, music, business forum and festival sports.

I attended the Hong Kong Festival 2012’s launch event at Wild Rocket, where we sampled a Hong Kong-inspired 7-course meal created by Singapore celebrity chef Willin Low. Galvanised by his trip in September, the menu features an interesting blend of Hong Kong signatures with innovative touches.

High Society, Marina Bay Sands

What started out as selling music is now dishing out delectable eats, ranging from modernised local delights to European fusion.

That CD-Shop was launched in 1994 and emerged as a leader in introducing the latest music trends to Singapore. In 2005, the company started producing works under its own High Society record label in partnership with the big 4 music labels, namely Universal Music, Sony BMG, Warner and EMI. They’ve won a great deal of accolades ever since.

In 2011, the first High Society restaurant opened in Marina Bay Sands Shoppes, followed by a second restaurant named High Society Mansion at Pacific Plaza, Scotts Road.

All-day-breakfast concepts are of utmost pertinence to late-risers who love breakfast foods like me. Jasper and I stumbled upon Eggs & Berries and it was an immediate consensus that we have to try it –we love eggs!

Situated at Changi City Point, chances of me passing by that far-flung end of Singapore is nearly zero. BUT, I will travel the distance to discover good food.

Did Eggs & Berries disappoint? Read on!
