Fresh Flavours with Anna Olson at the AFC Studio

Anna Olson is an acclaimed Canadian chef and baking extraordinaire, recognised internationally as the face of hit programmes such as ‘Sugar’ and ‘Fresh with Anna Olson’, which both air on AFC, StarHub Channel 435. The canny TV star charms our local foodies with her impressive skills in all things sweet and savoury, sharing tasty and approachable recipes.

Did you know? Before realising cooking and baking was her true calling, Anna Olson earned a degree in political studies and sociology. She spent a few years in banking before deciding it was not her life long dream. She is now a professionally trained chef with over fifteen years of experience in the culinary field.

In November, the Asian Food Channel organised a series of dining events with Chef Olson, and I had the privilege of attending an exclusive lunchtime press demo with her. ‘Fresh Flavours with Anna Olson’ is a Canadian Culinary Adventure tour across five countries in Asia, exclusively presented by the Asian Food Channel. Baking aficionados were in for a treat.

Here are three recipes that she shared with us:

IKYU

IKYU is a modern Japanese restaurant located in the Tiong Bahru enclave, pronounced as “E-Q”, and literally translated as “Take A Break” in English.

A respite from the frantic city on an off-the-beaten-path street, its food is what draws the crowd. This 54-seater diner was full house on a weekday evening when I visited.

Mouth Restaurant, China Square Central

Mouth Restaurant is not like what it used to be like years ago. It all began as a humble teahouse, catering to the Hong Kong community in Singapore who miss their hometown cuisine dearly.

After a couple decades of serving up authentic Cantonese cuisine, still going strong, they have hence evolved and progressed beyond their original concept of serving up conventional dishes –they now strive on creativity, but without deviating too far off from traditional roots.

(Re-visit) Kohii at One Shenton

Kohii was where I first met Derrick from SgFoodonFoot. I’ve been blogging about food for over a year and a half now, and I’m so glad I got to know so many wonderful people whom I now call friends.

Read my previous review here: https://melicacy.com/?p=3221

Kohii celebrated their first year anniversary in August, which saw the launch of new items and a dinner menu. This calls for a re-visit!

Waldorf Salad with Walnut ($10.50)

One thing I like about Kohii is their range of salad dressings –Soy Vinegrette, Sesame (Goma) and Miso. To me, it is always the dressing that makes or breaks a salad.

The Waldorf Salad is an extremely healthy vegetarian option in the menu that consists of green apples, walnuts and greens, served with a lemon wedge and strips of seaweed.

Cha Soba Tossed with Shoyu ($10.50)

If you’d like to include some healthy carbohydrates in your diet, a healthy vegetarian option would be the Cha Soba.

–“Festive at Open House”

Open House is a modern restaurant located on the forth floor of , offering all day dining daily with both international buffet and a-la-carte menus.

My first impression of the restaurant was: chic, classy, neat, and… where’s the food, is that it?

Supposedly a buffet restaurant, I imagined there to be an abundance of food where ravenous diners pile on their plates and vie for the last morsel, awaiting fresh replenishments thereafter.

This isn’t the case for Open House.

Striving for quality and not quantity, they maintain the freshness of the food by offering live stations, where diners are treated to piping-hot food that are fresh from the stove/oven –such as freshly made pizzas and cooked-to-order claypot dishes.

Roasted Char Siew Turkey with Five Spices

This Christmas, classic holiday recipes are injected with local flavours. One of such is the Roasted Char Siew Turkey with Five Spices.

Here is a mini festive buffet dining guide:
The magic of Christmas and the splendour of a New Year

“Pandastic” Mixed Fruit Cake ($45 for 1KG, 20cm diameter)

Cuteness overload.

Climbing to the top of the tree… oops! I mean climbing to the top of the ‘cutest Christmas cake’ chart this season is… Crystal Jade’s “Pandastic” Mixed Fruit Cake!

This one certainly brought a huge smile to my face. I’m a sucker for all things cute. Continue reading

Poulét’s Second Outlet at Great World City sees the launch of a new Signature dish

The ever-expanding Thai Express Group has got a large chain of restaurants under its belt. Poulét, its newest concept, has received innumerable positive feedback from returning patrons. Their second outlet, at Great World City, will not be their last.

The snaking queues at Bugis+’s outlet, especially on weekends, can be a tad overwhelming. I’ve had friends who waited more than 3 hours before they could get a table. The upcoming outlets would definitely be advantageous in dispersing the crowd.

Read about my previous dining experience at Poulét (Bugis+) here: https://melicacy.com/?p=4537

Along with the opening of Great World City outlet, Poulét has also launched a new Signature dish –a twist to the brand’s highly raved ‘Amazing French Roast Chicken’ (Poulét Roti).

Poulét de Cranberry ($17.80 for half, $30.80 for whole)

Cranberry Sauce, Double Pommery & Dijon Mustard

Pleasing the palate with both fruity and savoury notes, this new signature came just in time for the jolly festive season!
